RECIRCULATE WP 2- Water for Sanitation and Health Project

Work Package 2: Water for Sanitation and Health, is an important part of the Lancaster University-led Global Challenge Research Fund (GCRF) sponsored project RECIRCULATE: Driving Eco-Innovation in Africa – capacity building for a safe circular water economy

WP2 rationale: nearly one billion people now live in urban informal settlements across the developing world, presenting huge challenges around provision of safe drinking water and sanitation. Various efforts are ongoing in reducing health burdens for burgeoning low-income urban dwellers, with limited success.

The reasons are clear: shared drinking water usually provided via standpipes is relatively safe at source. However, the potential benefits are severely compromised by poorly managed toilets around the point of use – “the last 100 metres” – where water is taken from the standpipe to the home. Contaminated water in turn causes enteric infections, especially among children, contributing to the disease burden and even death.

WP2 focus: The project will pilot the most feasible ways to minimize this cross-contamination, to prove that a concerted, sustainable set of activities to better manage existing WASH facilities can lead to safer water.

Purchasing of cables to reduce the burning at Agbogbloshie – Pilot Incentive System

The E-Waste Programme aims to improve the conditions for sustainable management and disposal of electronic waste (e-waste) in Ghana. The programme for technical cooperation is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by “Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH” in partnership with the Ghana Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI).

In order to transform e-waste management from a widely unregulated and polluting sector into a modern and environmentally sound industry, the E-waste Programme supports in various aspects and closely cooperates with all relevant public and private stakeholders in Ghana.

Oeko-Institut has subcontracted Green Advocacy Ghana who owns a container based structure in the Old Fadama Scrap market, which is known as the Agbogbloshie Recycling Center. Green Ad is responsible for conducting the local market survey, purchasing test batches of cables, upgrading of the physical infrastructure and the conduct of the implementation phase (operating the handover centre, accepting and compensating cables at defined conditions, management of incentive budget.
