The IslandPlas project continues to make progress in strengthening community participation and local capacity for plastic recovery and management in São Tomé and Príncipe.

Following the launch of two plastic collection centres in the Lembá and Lobata districts, the project has advanced into an important phase of capacity building and stakeholder training. These activities are equipping local actors with the knowledge, skills, and responsibilities needed to support plastic collection, community sensitisation, and beneficiary engagement under the PlastiNetwork.

On 17 August 2026, a capacity-building and training session was held for the União dos Jovens Solidário para Desenvolvimento de Caué (UJSDC). The youth association, which works in the areas of environment and youth development, will collaborate with Sucata Papagaio to lead plastic collection and community sensitisation activities in Caué. Their involvement is expected to strengthen local ownership and encourage young people and communities to play a more active role in addressing plastic pollution.

A second training was conducted in Lembá on 26 August 2026, where a focal point was identified and trained to coordinate plastic collection activities within the district. The focal point will also support the identification and registration of beneficiaries, helping to ensure that individuals and groups participating in the plastic recovery system are properly documented and connected to the opportunities created through the project.

These activities represent an important step in moving the IslandPlas initiative from infrastructure development to community-level implementation and participation. By working with local organisations, youth groups, district stakeholders, and community focal points, the project is building the human capacity required to make the PlastiNetwork functional, inclusive, and sustainable.

Through the continued collaboration of GreenAd, Sucata Papagaio, IUCN, The Coca-Cola Foundation, the Government of São Tomé and Príncipe, and local stakeholders, IslandPlas is creating the foundations for a stronger plastic recovery system while promoting environmental awareness, community participation, and livelihood opportunities.
