Phase A of the Project
Local Impact Assessment and Due Diligence Analysis:
- Desk research was conducted to review and assess previous baseline studies on the living income of Ghana’s informal e-waste collectors. This research informed the development of targeted interventions aimed at improving their income and overall livelihood.
- Key intervention strategies were designed to enhance working conditions and address information gaps while aligning with SSF research objectives.
- A five-day baseline research incubation plan was executed, involving site visits, stakeholder engagement sessions, and field research. This included focus group discussions and interviews to support effective data collection for the SSF project.
In Phase B of the Project
Implementation of Interventions:
- Develop a technical proposal outlining action plans and timelines for execution. Efforts were made to establish long-term partnerships with industry stakeholders for sustainable e-waste interventions.
- Training programs were implemented to equip warehouse employees with the skills to manage e-waste processing efficiently, ensuring compliance with Basel Convention requirements, particularly regarding the transboundary movement of hazardous waste.
- A strategic business plan was formulated with financial projections and sustainability goals for the Ghana facility. A needs assessment was conducted to identify key stakeholders, including informal miners, women in mining, youth in mining communities, and other marginalized groups in selected mining districts.
- Stakeholder identification, engagement, and analysis were carried out to address potential social exclusion issues in the implementation phase. Additionally, a situational analysis was performed to establish the project’s context, alongside a comprehensive review of relevant laws, policies, and conventions related to mercury use and management in Ghana’s ASGM sector.
